Vanishing Eateries -- Can You Help Us Out?

Friday, July 22, 2011 5:35:00 PM

Restaurants downtown come and go. That’s part of the culture, it seems. But it still is painful to know that in the past month no less than three have said they are closing their doors: Vintage 301 in Southside, Ganache Bakery on North Elm and now Riva’s Trattoria on Greene Street, just announced on its website .

It makes us wonder: just how many restaurants have come and gone in downtown Greensboro over the years?

We'd like you to help us compile a list of places worth recalling. Maybe it was the spot you always stopped at for lunch, or the place you took a "first date."

If you remember any -- from last year or 50 years ago -- let us know. Click on the "Feedback" button below (at right) and tell us what you recall: the name, location, type of food and what it is about the place you remember the most.

We’ll post it on our site.

And to those restaurants bidding farewell to the center city, we add our best wishes and our thanks for the time they’ve spent here.

FYI: The restaurant that was once Solaris has re-opened as Summit Station.  Great place; plus a great blues jam every wednesday night!

These are not downtown establishments, but I still miss them:

Robust-Ah! A nice little coffee place in the shopping center on Pisgah Church, next to Barbarinos.  Great coffee, comfy chairs, free wi-fi.  It was my de-facto office for a while.

I've got 7 VANISHED RESTAURANTS I particularly remember - From Mary Alice Kurr-Murphy

1. The first one I think of is the old "DOWNTOWNER" it was an all night diner type place somewhere close to the corner of S Elm and McGee.......when I was in graduate school and lived in a "Multi-student house" at the end of Walker Avenue we used to throw HUGE parties that would last till close to dawn and not really end till we played tapes we made specifically to get people to leave...like Wagner's Ring Cycle and "Songs from the Spanish Inquisition" and then gathered all the left over partiers together to walk down to the "Downtowner" for a 4 am breakfast!

2. Number two is "Mantleworks" Restaurant and theater space. My memory of the Mantleworks is mostly regret that I never actually went there!

3. Number three is "Inside Out" which was further North on I believe Eugene...Vegetarian really good veggie and always had terrific emerging Greensboro Musicians

4. Number 4 is "Stocks & Buns" in the middle of the block on Elm that is now Center City Park.....The entire staff from City Arts would troupe in there for lunch on a regular basis...They had wonderful breads..the best quiche and soups around....when they closed down they produced a cookbook of their favorite recipes...I still regularly make their "Copper Mountain Quiche" and their "Sausage Chowder" and Green Potato" soups are staples of my wintertime menu at home.

5. Number 5 is "Out to Lunch" a teeny tiny take out only lunch bar that was next to the old Thalheimers building, now the Empire Room....Out to Lunch was another of our favorites at City Arts with really good sandwiches like cream cheese, olives and sprouts on whole wheat...or turkey & slaw with dressing on rye....and a sesame noodle side salad to die for!

6. Now, number 6 wasn't really downtown, it was on Tate Street...but OMG was the old Hong Kong House a great place to go for...everything, including those late night hunger runs after listening to some good music at "Friday's" or one of the other great old music venues that used to be around. Going in to the Hong Kong House was like being in your own house, everybody was friendly and kind and nobody in town has ever made wings as good as Amelia's....or the "Ming Ping Special" for that matter. When my daughter who is now 21, was a little girl and we would ask her where she wanted to go to eat dinner out she would always say "Melia's Kong House" OR

7. Number 7 "Tijuana Fats" I worked at Fats for 7 years off and on..so it really was like being home for me. I particularly remember the first day and night of "Liquor by the Drink" we opened at 10 am and by 10:01 we were pouring someone a Bloody Mary...we closed at 2 am and at 1:59 I was handing somebody a Margarita....
Mary Alice Kurr-Murphy, Manager City Arts
